Bariatric Medical Director
A native of Iowa, Dr. Pitt graduated from Northeast Missouri State University and attended Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine where he received his doctorate in 1989. He served his internship and general surgery residency at Kirksville Osteopathic Medicine. He is board certified in General Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons.
In 1993, he joined Columbia Surgical Associates. He opened an office in Osage Beach, Missouri and built a large general surgery practice. He was instrumental in helping to obtain the Lake Ozark General Hospital’s trauma center designation. He also served as an associate member of the Missouri Committee on Trauma and introduced advanced laparoscopic procedures to that institution. While practicing in Osage Beach he was active in hospital leadership, serving and chairing many committees including chairman of surgery.
In 2000, Dr. James Pitt joined his partners in the Columbia office. He has led the development of a bariatric surgery program at Boone Hospital Center. While currently offering laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, Dr. Pitt preformed many open and laparoscopic gastric bypasses starting in 2001. In addition to weight loss surgery, he also preforms advanced laparoscopic procedures, including laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery, laparoscopic hernia and gallbladder surgery.
Dr. Pitt remains active in medical leadership, serving as past president of the Boone County Medical Society and a member of the ASMBS (American Society of Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery).
